TUPPERS PLAINS, Ohio — Considering “Coleman” is a brand of cooler, Eastern’s Austin Coleman put the visiting Vinton County Vikings on ice.
That’s because Coleman pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the Eagles’ 4-0 victory on Tuesday in a non-league baseball makeup matchup in Meigs County.
Coleman also scored the game’s opening run, which proved to be the only marker the Eagles needed for the win.
Eastern scored twice in the first inning, followed by single points in the fourth and sixth stanzas by pinch-runner Nate Durst.
Coleman, meanwhile, kept the Vikings off the board — and also off the bases.
Vinton County’s only hits were singles by Grigsby in the second and by Saunders and Austin Ward in the third.
The Vikings did have runners on the corners in the third, but Coleman retired the next batter to begin a retirement of the final 13 Vikings he faced.
In all, he retired 15 of the final 16 he saw, after initially retiring the side 1-2-3 in the opening at-bat — part of eight of his first 10.
He also struck out 10, including two apiece in the first, second, fourth and final frames — and walked none.
With the win, Eastern improved to 14-8, while Vinton County fell to 2-21.
Both schools are members of the Tri-Valley Conference, but reside in opposite divisions.
Coleman helped himself at the plate by drawing a leadoff walk in the first, then scoring on an RBI-double by Cameron Richmond.
Richmond then stole second, and scored on an RBI sacrifice by Kaleb Hill.
The Eagles went down in order 1-2-3 in the second and third, but made it 3-0 in the fourth.
Hill singled to lead off and Durst pinch ran, as Ethen Richmond drew a walk — before Durst scored on the Vikings’ only error.
Following a 1-2-3 fifth frame, the Eagles added another insurance run in the sixth.
Hill again singled to lead off, as Durst stole second and eventually scored on an Ethen Richmond sacrifice fly.
The only other Eastern hits were all singles — by Josh Brewer in the first and back-to-back by Jesse Morris and Honaker in the sixth.
Eastern travels to Trimble on Friday for the TVC-Hocking Division finale.
