HUNTINGTON, W.Va. —A good night to be a Scarlet Knight.
The Cabell Midland boys and girls track and field teams both claimed first place in Wednesday night’s weather-shortened Last Chance Invitational, hosted by Huntington High.
The CMHS boys team took first with a total of 74.5 in the 11 events that were completed, while Poca was second (56) and Wahama was third (54). Chesapeake took fourth (44), the host Highlanders were fifth (42), Lincoln County was sixth (12), followed by Spring Valley (10.5) and Sherman (10). Charleston Catholic finished ninth with nine points, Chapmanville and Mingo Central tied for 10th with four points apiece, Hurricane was 12th with three points, while Hannan and Cross Lanes Christian tied for 13th with two points each.
The White Falcons’ 4x200m relay team of Brady Bumgarner, Austin Juelfs, Wesley Jones and Nolan Pierce claimed second place with a time of 1:36.66. Juelfs won the long jump with a leap of 20-5.5, Travis Kearns won the 1600m run with a time of 4:53.21, while Brodee Howard tied for first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 17.70.
Jones claimed second in the 400m dash (53.76), Pierce was fourth in the high jump (5-4), Mason Hildreth finished fourth in the 1600m run (5:01.91), while Wyatt Edwards was sixth in the discus throw (104-6).
The lone Wildcat to score was senior Aaron Coon, who claimed fifth in the shot put, with a distance of 37-10.
On the girls side, the Lady Scarlet Knights scored 104 to take first place, followed by Hurricane (35) and Cross Lanes Christian (30.5). Charleston Catholic was fourth (28), followed by Chesapeake (24), Poca (19) and Chapmanville (18). Wahama and Mingo Central tied for eighth with 14 points apiece, Teays Valley Christian and Huntington High tied for 10th with 12 each, while Spring Valley was 12th with 11 and Huntington St. Joseph was 13th with eight. Sherman scored 6.5 to take 14th place, while Hannan and Lincoln County tied for 15th with one marker each.
The WHS 4x200m relay quartet of Rebekah Roach, Elizabeth Mullins, Skylar Riffle and Kaleigh Stewart claimed third place with a time of 1:58.85, while Stewart finished second in the long jump with a distance of 15-4.
Hannan sophomore Cassidy Duffer claimed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 26-5, scoing the Lady Wildcats’ lone point.
