Amid wind, rain and lightning in the opening two days of this week, the Gallia Academy High School tennis team split a pair of matches on Monday and Tuesday.
On Monday, the visiting Blue Devils defeated Logan 3-2 in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League tilt, completing the season sweep of the Chieftains — which they also defeated 3-2 at Gallia Academy earlier this year.
On Tuesday, the Blue Devils — despite play suspended twice because of lightning — dropped a non-league decision to visiting Marietta by a score of 4-1.
The two-day split kept Gallia Academy’s overall record even at 5-5, as the Blue Devils raised their league record to 3-1 with the win over Logan.
The Blue Devils dropped Logan’s record to 3-7 — with all seven Chieftain losses being by 3-2 counts.
Logan is 0-5 in the SEOAL, as Gallia Academy made it a perfect 10-for-10 over Logan in matches in the past five years.
Monday’s matchup marked what is believed to be the final between the two teams — since SEOAL competition ceases after this spring.
Gallia Academy, which traveled to Athens on Wednesday for a league makeup contest, still trails Jackson (3-0) by a half-game in the league championship race.
The Ironmen’s match against Athens on Tuesday was postponed, as the Blue Devils get their rematch against visiting Jackson on Monday, May 2.
In a battle of windy conditions, the Blue Devils swept the three singles matches against Logan — with the first and second singles going the full three sets.
In both instances, Gallia Academy’s Pierce Wilcoxon at first singles and Miles Cornwell at second singles won the opening and closing sets, sandwiched around Logan’s Nick Kudlapur and Nathan Kudlapur taking the middle set.
Wilcoxon won against Nick Kudlapur 6-3, 1-6 and 6-4, while Cornwell won against Nathan Kudlapur 6-1, 0-6 and 6-1.
At third singles, Blue Devil senior Adriana Wilcoxon swept Jeremiah Martin 6-2, 6-3.
The Chieftains swept the two doubles matches, and won in straight sets.
Riley Kelch and Justin Vogt defeated Dekota Metzler and Olivia Meadows at first doubles 6-0, 7-6, while Colton Lonberger and Jacob Peters swept MiKayla Edelmann and Katie Carpenter 6-4, 6-3.
Against Marietta, all five matches were decided in straight sets — with only Adriana Wilcoxon winning for Gallia Academy at third singles.
She swept Jacob Freeland 6-0, 6-4.
The Tigers took the other four affairs, with Jack Hirschfield sweeping Pierce Wilcoxon 6-3, 6-1 at first singles — and Eric Delong sweeping Cornwell at second singles 6-4, 7-5.
In the doubles bouts, the Blue Devils only earned a single point.
Jack Hu and Tyler Wise blanked Edelmann and Jenelle Stevens at first doubles (6-0, 6-0).
Jackson Kelly and Cline claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Metzler and Carpenter at second doubles.
Gallia Academy returns home, and returns to non-league action, against Ironton today.
