ALBANY, Ohio — A tough night, from start to finish.
The River Valley girls basketball team never mustered more than seven points in any of the four quarters Thursday night during a 56-20 setback to host Alexander in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division matchup at ‘The Alley’ in Athens County.
The visiting Lady Raiders (8-9, 4-5 TVC Ohio) never led and managed only two field goals in the first half, which allowed the Lady Spartans (12-5, 7-2) to cruise out to a commanding 28-7 cushion at the break.
AHS made its biggest charge of the night during a 21-6 third quarter run, which gave the Red, White and Black a sizable 49-13 edge headed into the finale. Both teams scored seven points apiece down the stretch to wrap up the 46-point outcome.
Alexander claimed a season sweep and handed RVHS its first loss of the year during a 48-33 decision in Bidwell back on December 10. The Lady Raiders have dropped eight of their last 11 decisions since that contest.
The Silver and Black made only eight field goals — all inside the arc — and also went 4-of-8 at the free throw line for 50 percent. Courtney Smith and Erin Jackson both led the guests with six points apiece.
Tianna Qualls and Leia Moore each contributed three markers, while Jaden Neal rounded out the Lady Raiders’ tally with two points. Senior starter Shelby Brown also missed her second straight game due to an injury.
Rachel Richardson led the Lady Spartans with a game-high 20 points, with 11 of those coming in the first half. Leah Richardson was next with 12 points, while Alexis Mohler and McKenna Rice each contributed eight markers.
Jala Mace was next with six points, while Nicole Hudnall rounded out the winning tally with two points. AHS made six of its 21 field goals from behind the arc and also went 8-of-11 at the free throw line for 73 percent.
River Valley returns to action Monday when it hosts Athens in a TVC Ohio contest at 6 p.m.
