RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The University of Rio Grande women’s soccer team kept its hopes of hosting a Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament game alive with a 1-0 Senior Night win over Carlow University, Saturday evening, at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm stopped a three-game losing slide, improving to 5-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
The Celtics dropped to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the KIAC with the loss.
Sophomore Haley Merritt (Wayne, WV) scored what proved to be the game’s only goal, taking a pass from senior Rachel Hoffman (Franklin, OH) and rifling a shot past Carlow goalkeeper Lexie Mirenda with 15:49 gone in the first half.
Rio Grande limited its guests to just seven shots overall and three shots on goal. The RedStorm had 17 shots for the game, six of which were on target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Garn (Morrow, OH) had three saves in the winning effort for Rio.
Mirenda had five saves in a losing cause for the Celtics.
The contest marked the final regular season home appearance for five RedStorm seniors – Hoffman, Kasey Crow, Melissa Dickerson, Taylor Ahrens and Courtney Young.
Rio Grande returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Owensboro, Ky. for a KIAC contest with Brescia University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
