THE PLAINS, Ohio — League champions for a reason.
The Meigs volleyball team dropped a straight games decision to Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division host Athens on Thursday night in McAfee Gymnasium, as the Lady Bulldogs capped off their perfect league run.
Athens (17-5, 12-0 TVC Ohio) opened the match with a wire-to-wire 25-12 victory in the first game.
The Lady Marauders (9-13, 6-6) led 1-0 and 3-1 in the second game, but the hosts took the advantage at 4-3 and never trailed again. The Lady Bulldogs also won Game 2 by a 25-12 final.
After a trio of lead changes early in the third game, Athens pulled away and eventually won the third by a 25-16 final.
For the match, Athens finished with a 66.7-to-34.2 advantage in side-out percentage.
Meigs’s service attack was led by Marissa Noble and Bre Lilly with three points apiece. Maddie Fields, Kassidy Betzing, Maci Hood and Saelym Larsen each had two points.
Sierra Smith led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 service points, followed by Emma Hauschild with seven points and Serena Smith with six. Gabby Carey and Baelyn Carey each had five points, Sydney Rutter and Nicole Sammons added four points apiece, while Taylor Walls and Kyleigh Heiler earned three and two points respectively.
Athens also defeated the Maroon and Gold by a 3-0 count on Sept. 19 in Rocksprings.
Meigs returns to action in the Division III sectional semifinal at home on Tuesday, when the eighth-seeded Lady Marauders welcome ninth-seeded New Lexington.
