STEWART, Ohio — It would have been something for South Gallia to end its baseball season with a win.
Unfortunately for the visiting Rebels, that was not in the final hand of cards on Tuesday, as Federal Hocking defeated South Gallia 18-8 in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division makeup matchup.
Simply playing out the mandatory league schedule, the Lancers earned a season split with the Rebels, which edged Federal Hocking 13-12 in the two teams’ initial meeting back on April 26 on South Gallia’s new field.
In the return bout, which was a makeup from 10 days ago, both clubs scored twice in the opening inning, before the Lancers led 3-2 after two.
South Gallia gained the tying run in the top of the third, but the Lancers erupted for 10 runs in the bottom half to build a comfortable 13-3 advantage.
This time, the Rebels’ rally didn’t produce the comeback.
South Gallia had trailed 8-2 in its win over Federal Hocking, but the Rebels only got to within 13-7 after a four-spot in the fourth frame.
The Lancers got three runs back to lead 16-7 following four, then clinched the 10-run mercy rule by scoring twice in the fifth for the 18-8 triumph.
With the loss, South Gallia ends its second consecutive season with one win —wrapping up the campaign at 1-23.
Federal Hocking finishes at 2-21, as both squads ended up at 1-15 in the TVC-Hocking.
The Lancers remain the Rebels’ only victories in the past four years, as South Gallia got a win over FHHS last season as well.
For Federal Hocking, Gavin Tate pitched the first four and two-thirds innings for the win, allowing only one earned run on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Four different Rebels pitched for South Gallia, as Joey Woodall went the opening two innings.
Tate, Dillon Wilfong and Chase Reed recorded two hits apiece for the Lancers, including Reed with a double.
For the Rebels, Colton Coughenhour, Cory Bryan, Chase Kemper and Woodall wound up with a single apiece, as Bryan and Trey Sanders had two RBIs while Coughenour collected one.
Sanders also walked twice, as Coughenour had two runs scored.
