URG volleyball lands 2 NAIA Scholar-Athletes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two members of the University of Rio Grande volleyball team are among the 481 student-athletes who have been named 2016 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Autumn Snider, a senior right side hitter/middle blocker from Marion, Ohio and Aleah Pelphrey, a junior right side hitter from Piketon, Ohio represented the RedStorm on the list.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

Snider is majoring in Health Care Administration, while minoring in Business Management. Pelphrey is an Early Childhood Education major.

Midland (Neb.) lead all institutions with 10 individuals on the list. In total, 152 institutions were named to the list.

URG men’s soccer nets 4 NAIA Scholar-Athletes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Four members of the University of Rio Grande men’s soccer team were among the 423 student-athletes named 2016 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Seniors Heitor de Melo (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Jeremy de Hoog (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and Pau Delgado Rodriguez (Barcelona, Spain) represented the RedStorm on the list, as did junior Jorge Guinovart (Barcelona, Spain).

Delgado Rodriguez, a midfielder, is a Business/Marketing major, while de Melo, a defender, is major in Marketing with a minor in Photography.

Guinovart, a midfielder, is a Business Management/Marketing major who is minoring in Environmental Science, while de Hoog, a defender, is a Business Management major.

Florida Memorial landed the most individuals on the list with 15.

Rio’s Brown recognized by AVCA

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — University of Rio Grande senior defensive specialist Chandler Brown has been named to the 2016 NAIA All-MidCentral Region Team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Brown, a native of Stockdale, Ohio, was named to the 14-member team for the second straight season.

Brown finished with a team-high 692 digs and became the school’s all-time leader in the category earlier in the season. She also led the club in service aces with 45.

Brown was a first team All-River States Conference honoree and was named the league’s Libero of the Year.

Joining Brown on the All-MidCentral team was Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Annelise Rohrer, Kristen Osborn and Ashley Gingerich; Remy Bucknor, Morgan Miller, Banner Rodgers and Bianca Cifaldi of Indiana Wesleyan University; Point Park University’s Shiloh Simonson; Lindi Thomas and Keeana Walton of Indiana University Kokomo; Marian University’s Frannie Stephenson; Haley Harrell of Taylor University and Indiana University Southeast’s Monica Loftus.

Rio Grande senior setter Kayla Briley was among the eight players named Honorable Mention selections.

Briley, a native of Marion, Ohio, became the school’s all-time leader in assists after tallying 1,011 for the season. She was also second among Rio’s team leaders with 350 digs and ranked fourth on the team in both kills (244) and service aces (23).

Briley was also a first team All-RSC selection.
