PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Another solid postseason showing for the Big Blacks.

Point Pleasant landed seven representatives on the 2016 Class AA All-State Football Team released Thursday, as selected by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

The Big Blacks — who take a state best 43-game regular season winning streak into next fall — completed the program’s fourth consecutive unbeaten regular season en route to an 11-1 overall finish and a ninth straight appearance in the playoffs.

Seniors Seth Stewart and Grant Safford were repeat selections to the all-state squad after both were members of the Class AAA team in 2015.

Stewart — a verbal commit to Louisiana State University — was a first team choice as an offensive lineman, while Safford — who rushed for 1,755 yards and 23 touchdowns — was a first team utility selection on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior Jason Schultz was chosen as a second team kicker after successfully booting 10 field goals and 60-of-69 PAT tries on the season.

Sophomore Cason Payne — who became the first PPHS quarterback to both run and throw for 1,000 yards in the same season — was also a second team selection as a defensive back.

Point Pleasant senior Zach Wamsley was the lone Point Pleasant selection to the special honorable mention squad, while seniors Keshawn Stover and Gage Gibson were both honorable mention choices.

It was the second time in three years that PPHS had seven players named to the all-state football squad. Last year’s 12-1 Class AAA state semifinalist team received only six selections.

Mingo Central quarterback Jeremy Dillon and Fairmont linebacker Jake Abbott were named first team captains, while Lincoln quarterback Kobie Carpenter and Nicholas County linebacker Tate Mays were chosen as the second team captains.
