GALLIPOLIS — A long-time Gallia County auxiliary deputy and active community member was honored on Thursday morning as his unit number was officially retired from use at the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office.
The family of the late Johnnie E. Russell gathered on Thursday in the Gallia County Commissioners’ chambers at the Gallia County Courthouse where a commemorative plaque in honor of Russell was bestowed upon his wife, Carol, by Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning.
Russell, who passed away last December, was chosen by the sheriff’s office for “unit number retirement” in dedication of the work he performed on behalf of the Gallia County Special Deputies Association and all of Gallia County’s citizens.
Russell served as an auxiliary deputy with the sheriff’s office from 1978 until his passing last year and also served as the President of the Special Deputies Association.
According to Sheriff Browning, the unit number assigned to Russell will be retired from service and will no longer be used by any member of the sheriff’s office.
