VINTON — Each year, the National FFA Organization honors the cream-of-the-crop with the organization’s highest honor — the American FFA Degree — for dedication to academic and professional excellence. This year, one such recipient was Kaitlyn Roberts, who received the award during the 85th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. Roberts represents the River Valley FFA Chapter and resides in Vinton.

To be eligible for the award, FFA members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program in which they start, own or hold a professional position in an existing agricultural enterprise. Recipients must also complete 50 community service hours, as well as demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement. Roberts started ‘Roberts Family Show Pigs’ for her SAE in Diversified Livestock, which also includes dairy and beef cattle and sheep.

Roberts is a 2011 graduate of River Valley High School (RVHS) and was involved in a number of extracurricular activities including varsity track, basketball and volleyball.

Through FFA, Roberts took part in numerous activities over the course of her tenure including various FFA camps, soil judging, livestock judging, state and national conventions, fruit sales, Junior Fair Board and Junior Leaders. She was president of the Raccoon Valley 4-H club for six years and is a member of several associations including National Junior Swine, American Berkshire and Team Pure Bred.

Roberts won the grand champion Berkshire Boar at the Ohio State Fair in 2012. She also had the grand champion spot donor gilt and reserve champion spot donor gilt in 2012.

Roberts is the daughter of Greg and Cindy Roberts, of Vinton.

The National FFA Organization is a national youth organization of 540,379 student members representing 7,489 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. For more information, visit www.FFA.org and on Facebook and Twitter.
