GALLIA COUNTY — Ghouls, ghosts and goblins will be out in force this evening as today marks the official day for trick-or-treating in Gallia County.
Trick-or-treat times for the smaller villages throughout the county, as well as the City of Gallipolis are set for 5:30-6:30 p.m.
According to the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office, as in previous years, Gallia County sheriff’s deputies, auxiliary deputies, crime watch members and village marshals will handing out candy at government buildings in the majority of the villages in the county, including at the Gallia County Courthouse.
Additionally, several area churches will be holding “trunk-or-treat” activities on Thursday evening.
Addison Freewill Baptist Church will be hosting trunk-or-treat beginning at 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. The Gallipolis Church of Christ in Christian Union, located on Eastern Avenue, will also be hosting a similar event beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the church parking lot. The event is scheduled to continue until 7 p.m. Promiseland Church at Clay Chapel off of Ohio 218 is also hosting trunk-or-treat this evening. It will be held from 7-8 p.m.
Several other activities are planned for the weekend in Gallia County.
Bossard Memorial Library will be once again be hosting a “Boo Bash” on Saturday. The event, themed as a “monster mash” will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the library. The movie “Frankenstein” will be shown outdoors beginning at 7 p.m.
Also on Saturday, Southwestern Elementary will be holding its annual fall festival at 4 p.m. Food will be available, along with games. An auction will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The VFW Post 4464 in Gallipolis also has events planned for the weekend.
On Friday, a Halloween party will be held from 6-11 p.m. at the post located on Third Avenue in Gallipolis. A hog roast will follow on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. The event will be dine-in or carry out. For more information, call (740) 446-4464.
The 19th Annual Bidwell Halloween Parade will also be held on Saturday. Lineup begins at 3:30 p.m. Mobile units will meet at River Valley Middle School. Walking units will join in at the fire department. The parade will begin at 4 p.m. For more information call (740) 388-8547 or (740) 388-8214.
As in every year as the Halloween festivities approach, the Gallipolis Police Department and the sheriff’s office have issued various safety tips for those planning on making the trek door-to-door this evening.
· A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.
· Teach children their home phone number and how to call 9-1-1 if they have an emergency or become lost. 9-1-1 can be dialed free from any phone.
· Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Consider adding reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
· Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
· Secure emergency identification (name, address, phone number) discreetly within Halloween attire or on a bracelet.
· To easily see and be seen, children and their escorts should carry flashlights with fresh batteries or glow sticks.
· Swords, knives and similar costume accessories, if used, should be soft and flexible to prevent injury.
· When purchasing costumes, wigs, and accessories, look for labels that indicate they are flame resistant. Review the concept of “stop, drop and roll” with children.
· Remain in well-lit areas and always use the sidewalk, if possible. If there is no sidewalk available, walk at the farthest edge of the roadway facing traffic.
· Do not assume right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing trick-or-treaters, just because one car stops it does not mean that others will. Drivers are also advised to keep speeds down in residential areas and keep in-car distractions to a minimum.
· Children should not eat any treats until a parent or trusted adult has thoroughly checked the candy.
