GALLIPOLIS — The Gallia County Agricultural Center Board hosted a catered dinner for the Gallipolis FFA Soil Judging teams on Monday at Bob Evans Farm to recognize the students for their outstanding accomplishments at the State Soil Judging competition. Both teams are headed to the National Competition in Oklahoma this Saturday. This will be the first time since the 1950s that a team from southern Ohio has been represented at the national contest.
The Gallipolis FFA placed first in the agricultural use event and fourth in the urban event at the state contest which qualified them for the national contest.
The state contest was held at Malabar Farms in Richland County, Ohio. About 185 students participated in the agricultural use contest and about 180 students competed in the urban use contest. Five schools from each district in Ohio were represented totaling about 50 schools in each contest.
The ag use team included Briggs Shoemaker, Cody Call, Scott Warren and Chris Elliott. Shoemaker was the team high scoring individual netting first place in the state.
The urban use team included Thomas Holley, Jordyn Benson, Elizabeth Ours and Jimmy Clagg. Holley was the team high scoring individual placing second in the state.
The Agricultural Center Board, Gallia County Farm Bureau and the Gallia-Jackson-Vinton JVSD are sponsoring the students’ upcoming trip to Oklahoma.
