GALLIA COUNTY — Are you between the ages of 14 and 18 (as of Jan. 1, 2012)? Do you like to camp? Have you ever thought about being a camp counselor? Counseling is a wonderful way to build leadership and workforce skills that you will use for a lifetime, and Gallia County 4-H-ers need you!

What is 4-H camp all about?

“For campers it’s a time of excitement, challenges, games and lots of fun. For many, camp may be the place they first show off a special talent, lead an activity or speak in front of a group,” said Tracy Winters, OSU Extension Educator for 4-H Youth Development. “Maybe it’s the place they do something they didn’t think they could do, like dive off the diving board, paddle a canoe or successfully complete the high ropes challenge course. Camp is a place where everyone gets to be included, everyone meets new friends, and everyone gets a chance to shine.”

For teen counselors, a totally new side of camp emerges. It becomes a place of responsibility.

“The realization sets in that parents trust you with the safety of their children for the week,” said Winters. “Counselors soon learn that camp is not just about having fun, but building and using the skills they have learned — workforce skills that will last them a lifetime.”

According to Winters, applications are being accepted for the 2012 4-H camping year. Counselor’s responsibilities include: camp planning, leading summer camp activities, teaching lessons, cabin management, mentoring and much more. All counselors must attend a two-day (overnight) training called Counselor College. This training is provided at Canters Cave 4-H camp located in Jackson Ohio. The 2012 Counselor College will be held March 16 and 17, the cost to attend is $40, and counselors will receive 15 of their 24 mandatory training hours. Camping forms are available on line at www.gallia.osu.edu or may be picked up at the OSU Extension office located at 111 Jackson Pike, Gallipolis.

“Counselors are the life of our summer camp program,” added Winters. “A good camp counselor can make a good camp great and can create an experience that will be life-long memory for that camper.”

The deadline to return forms has been extended to January 10. For questions or more information please call 740-446-7007.
