Editor’s note: The story that ran with the Madrigals photo in Tuesday’s edition of the Gallipolis Daily Tribune was published in error. The story below reflects the current achievements of the Gallia Academy Madrigals and Women’s Choir.
GALLIPOLIS — The Gallia Academy Madrigals and Women’s Choir, under the direction of Marilyn Wills, recently performed at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 17 Large Group Adjudicated Event at Shawnee State University.
The Women’s Choir earned an Excellent rating for their performance. The Women’s Choir performed ‘Tis You That Are the Music music by Cynthia Gray and text from Listening by Amy Lowell (1874-1925) (alt. from A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass), The Sword of Bunker Hill (Civil War Song) by Bernard Covert & William R. Wallace and arranged by Matthew Armstrong. Soloists for The Sword of Bunker Hill was Jamie Adamson and Hunter Arthur. The third music selection they performed was Irish Blessing (Traditional) by Linda Spevacek.
The Madrigals earned a superior rating for the District performance which qualifies the group to perform at OMEA State Choir Contest. The Madrigals performed Al Shlosha D’varim with music by Allan E. Naplan and text by Pirkei Avot (Mishnah), Mohlang ke kgotlelang hae arranged by Rudolf de Beer (Sesotho Folk Song) and Will There Really Be A Morning? by Victor C. Johnson.
The OMEA event requires choirs and bands to perform three music selections for a panel of three judges, who then critique the performing groups. Following the stage performance the group then performs for the sight-reading portion of the event. Each choir member and director is given a song selection which they have never seen before. The group has four minutes to discuss and analyze the music selection. Following the 4 minutes the choir sings the music selection with accompaniment for the judge. Then, the group has 1 minute to further analyze the music selection and first performance. Finally, the choir sings the music selection a cappella for the judge and a rating is given for the overall performance.
Each judge provides an assessment sheet and audio recording outlining the groups musical strengths and weaknesses. Musical concepts such as tone, intonation, interpretation, dynamic levels, expression, note accuracy and rhythmic accuracy are assessed during the groups performance. Following the assessment each judge rates the performing group on a scale of superior, excellent, good, fair and poor (1-5). Each of the judges scores are averaged to give the final rating. In order for a group to qualify for OMEA State contest they must earn a superior rating.
The Madrigals will be traveling to Cincinnati area on April 26 or 27 (date and time to be determined) to perform for the Ohio Music Education Association State Choir Adjudicated Event.
