GALLIA COUNTY — Although final, official election results won’t be tallied and reported by the Gallia County Board of Elections for several days, even the preliminary results published in the Wednesday edition of the Gallipolis Daily Tribune were less complete than normal following a computer error that slowed the tallying of approximately 1,000 absentee votes and delayed the availability of the full unofficial snapshot of how Gallia County residents shaped this election.

The following is a list of still unofficial, but up-to-date Gallia County election results for contested races in the 2012 general election, as provided by the Gallia County Board of Elections:

With all 35 precincts reporting, Gallia Countians cast 12,327 votes in the presidential race, with an overwhelming 61.62 percent supporting Gov. Mitt Romney (R) and 35.91 percent voting for President Barack Obama (D). Each of five additional candidates received less than one percent of the Gallia County vote. Despite strong Republican leanings in southern Ohio, the Associated Press named Obama the winner of battleground Ohio and ultimately the entire race. Romney conceded by telephone shortly after midnight.

On the county level, Gallia decided two commissioners’ races, opting to unseat incumbents in both cases. With 11,991 votes cast, “Coach” Brent Saunders (R) netted a slim win over Incumbent Joe Foster (D) with a 51.33 percent to 48.67 percent ratio. In the second commissioners’ race, David Smith (R) edged out Incumbent Lois Snyder (D), with a 54.93 percent to 45.07 percent split.

The Clerk of Courts race between Incumbent Noreen Saunders (R) and challenger Belinda Burnett (D) garnered 12,004 votes from Gallia County residents, with 62.29 percent supporting Saunders and 37.71 percent backing Burnett.

In a three-way race for Gallia County Treasurer, Incumbent Steve McGhee (R) won 42.75 percent of the 12,002 votes cast, while Pamela Riley (D) netted 32.94 percent and Gary Jarvis (I) won 24.31 percent.

On the county level, several races went unopposed, but the number of votes for each candidate are as follows: Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Adkins — 8,397; Sheriff Joe Browning — 9,378; Recorder Roger Walker — 8,434; Engineer Brett Boothe — 8,971; and Coroner Dan Whiteley — 9,300.

Gallia County strongly supported Gallipolis native Ryan Smith (R) for State Representative of the 93rd House District with 73.61 percent of the vote as opposed to Josh Bailey’s (D) 26.39 percent. Gallia Countians cast 11,841 votes in the race that ultimately went to Smith.

Gallia residents cast 12,052 votes in the U.S. Senator’s race among Incumbent Sherrod Brown (D) and challengers Josh Mandel (R) and Scott Rupert (I), with 55.07 percent of the vote going to Mandel, 40.82 percent supporting Brown and 4.11 percent backing Rupert. Brown ultimately pulled enough votes in his district to net the win despite strong Republican support in southern Ohio counties.

Approximately 11,879 Gallia votes were cast in the U.S. Congressional race between Incumbent Bill Johnson (R) and Charlie Wilson (D), with 56.23 percent of the vote going to Johnson and 43.77 percent going to Wilson. Johnson ultimately got the nod.

Gallia County cast 8,201 votes in the State Board of Education race between Jeff Hardin (R) and Todd Book (D), backing Hardin with 72.61 percent of the vote to Book’s 27.39 percent. Hardin won the seat, according to unofficial results.

The only unopposed State Senator’s race was that of Bob Peterson (R), who netted 7,230 Gallia County votes.

Gallia County residents weighed in on three Supreme Court Justice races. The first, between Terrence O’Donnell (R) and Mike Skindell (D) garnered 8,389 votes in Gallia County, with 61.10 percent going to O’Donnell and 38.90 percent going to Skindell. O’Donnell has won the seat, according to unofficial results.

The second Supreme Court Justice race between Robert Cupp (R) and William O’Neill (D) brought 8,333 Gallia County votes, with 62.28 percent going to O’Neill and 37.72 percent backing Cupp. O’Neill has won the seat, according to unofficial results.

The third Supreme Court race between Yvette McGee Brown (D) and Sharon Kennedy (R) garnered 8,600 Gallia County votes, with 69.76 percent going to Kennedy and 30.24 percent supporting Brown. Kennedy has won the seat, according to unofficial results.

Finally, two seats for the Judge of Court of Appeals 4th District were filled. The first, between Leonard Holzapfel (R) and Marie Hoover (D), netted 9,069 Gallia County votes, with 58.99 percent going to Holzapfel and 41.01 percent going to Hoover. Hoover has won the seat, according to unofficial results.

The second race, in which William Harsha (R) ran unopposed, garnered 7,079 Gallia County votes.
