GALLIPOLIS — The Gallia County Board of Commissioners will reorganize for the 2013 calendar year during a special meeting on Monday.

The reorganizational meeting, scheduled for 12 p.m. on Monday, will be held in the commissioners’ chambers at the Gallia County Courthouse and will allow the three-person commission to elect a 2013 president and vice-president.

Newly elected commissioners David K. Smith and Brent A. Saunders attended their first commission meeting of 2013 last week during the commission’s regular Thursday meeting.

Smith, a Republican who previously served as a county commissioner from 2005-2009, was elected in November after defeating previous commissioner Democrat Lois Snyder.

Newcomer and Republican “Coach” Brent A. Saunders — the former Gallia Academy Middle School principal and Varsity Football Coach — narrowly defeated Democrat Joe Foster this November for the remaining open seat on the commission.

According to the Ohio Revised Code, the board of county commissioners shall organize on the second Monday of January of each year and, during this meeting, elect, from among its members, a president who will serve a one-year term and preside over all of the regular and special sessions of the board.

In 2012, county commissioner Harold Montgomery was elected to serve as the commission president.

Montgomery, who was elected in November 2010, is the third member of the new all-Republican board.

Following Monday’s organizational meeting, the commission will meet again at 9 a.m. on Thursday, January 17 in the commissioners’ chambers for their regular weekly meeting.
