RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The University of Rio Grande cheerleaders are organizing the first annual ‘Bevo Walk’ as part of the Walk For The Cure campaign on Sunday, November 4, at 2 p.m.

The walk, which is free and open to the public, will begin at the outdoor basketball court on the URG campus.

The purpose of the walk is an attempt to bring attention to esophageal cancer – the disease that the former Rio Grande men’s basketball great Clarence “Bevo” Francis is currently battling.

“We just wanted to start a new tradition, get more involved with our school and make a difference by trying to give back,” said Gwendolyn Rose, a Rio cheerleader and one of the event’s organizers.

Sponsors for the event are currently being sought and there are four levels of sponsorship available.

Each sponsor’s name will appear on the walk t-shirt. The color of the shirt will be periwinkle, which is the color of the ribbon signifying the fight against esophageal cancer.

The deadline for sponsors to get their name on the t-shirt is Monday, October 29. Checks should be made payable to the University of Rio Grande.

All of the proceeds raised from the event will go toward cancer research. For more information, contact Rose at (937) 623-2090.
