Board OKs hirings

GALLIPOLIS — Employment of a guidance counselor and two new teachers were approved by the Gallia County Local Board of Education at its regular monthly meeting on Monday.

On a unanimous vote, the board approved hiring Erin Bush for the guidance position, while Jessica Green and Kelsey Mitchem were employed as teachers, all on one-year contracts for the 2009-10 school year.

Larry West was employed as a custodian on a one-year contract. The board accepted the resignation of Catharine Huelsman as a teacher and from her supplemental contract as Quiz Bowl advisor.

Granted supplemental contracts, by school, were:

South Gallia Junior High — Brenda Fortner, Quiz Bowl advisor, half-salary, Academic Fair advisor and Student Council advisor; Carol Miller, Beta Club advisor, half-salary; Bridget Cox, Quiz Bowl advisor; T.C. Beaver, junior high football coach; Timmy Caldwell, eight grade girls basketball coach; John Lusher, seventh grade girls basketball coach; Mike Fortner, eighth grade boys basketball coach; Michael Jenkins, eighth grade volleyball coach; Joel Skidmore, junior high track coach; Frantina Johnson, junior high cheerleader advisor.

South Gallia High School — Brett Bostic, head girls basketball coach and open gym supervisor, half-salary; Mike Stowers, assistant girls basketball coach; Donald Saunders, open gym suoervisor, half-salary, and head boys basketball coach; James Brace, assistant boys basketball coach; Jason Merrick, freshman biys basketball coach; Justy Burleson, head football coach and weight room supervisor; Jason Peck, assistant football coach and weight room supervisor, half-salary; Brad Harris, assistant football coach; Jessicca Cantrell, JV cheerleader advisor; Frantina Johnson, Quiz Bowl advisor, half-salary.

River Valley High School — Jacob Nolan, cross country coach; Jordan Hill, assistant boys basketball coach; Christopher Tackett, freshman boys basketball coach.

Employed on extended service for the 2009-10 school year were Sheri Johnson and Kimberly Skidmore, nurses, five days; Linda Baird and Joann Bapst, librarians, 10 days; Jan Coen and Erin Bush, guidance counselors, 15 days; Cody Boothe, guidance counselor, 15 days (board member Joyce Boothe abstained); David Colvin and Cassandra Thompson-Chapman, band directors, 10 days; Juanita Austin, Catherine Greenleaf and Beth James, home economics, 10 days; and William Holcomb, Matthew Huck and David Pope, vocational agriculture/business, 40 days.

In addition, the board authorized the treasurer to bid on tires, heating fuel and bus fuel, bread and milk, and trash removal.
