GALLIPOLIS — A student from Washington Elementary School was injured after being struck by a bus Thursday afternoon as school was dismissing for the day.

According to a report issued by the Gallipolis Police Department, Michael R. Vallee, 11, Gallipolis, ran into traffic on State Street/Ohio 588 where he was hit by a bus owned by Guiding Hand School, which was being driven by Kim S. Double of Patriot. The incident was reported at 3:28 p.m.

Gallia County EMS transported the boy to Holzer Medical Center. His injuries were described as non-life threatening, according to the police report. EMS initially reported at the scene that it appeared the boy had suffered a broken leg, but no other details were made available.

Chief Clint Patterson said the by avoided being struck by one vehicle before he was hit by the bus. Patterson said that eastbound traffic was stopped, but the bus, which was headed west on State Street/Ohio 588, was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the boy.

Washington Elementary School is being temporarily housed at the former site of Gallia Academy High School at 340 Fourth Avenue because the Gallipolis City School District is in the process of renovating the elementary school’s permanent home at 450 Fourth Avenue.

The intersection of Fourth Avenue and State Street/Ohio 588 is a high-traffic area and Patterson advises local motorists to “use extreme caution while traveling near the old high school and remember that small children will be in the area.

The former GAHS complex is also home to Gallia Academy Middle School.
