GALLIPOLIS — Dedicating new schools will be the thing to do this weekend.

Nearly four years after the passage of bond issues to support the construction of three new high schools in Gallia County, the public will see the fruits of their yes votes when the buildings are dedicated on Saturday and Sunday.

The new South Gallia High School at Mercerville will be christened in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, while the new River Valley High School at Bidwell is to be opened to the public at 2 p.m.

The new Gallia Academy High School at Centenary will be dedicated and the public invited to an open house at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

GAHS students will begin classes in the new building on Monday, Aug. 24. Classes at the new RVHS and SGHS begin Wednesday, Aug. 26.

A 7.2 -mill bond issue to provide a 36 percent share of local funding for the new GAHS was approved in November 2005 after the Gallipolis City Schools’ inclusion on the Ohio School Facilities Commission’s list for funding was approved. The “Red Dot for Kids” campaign touted the need for new facilities to the public.

With that support, not only was a new GAHS made possible, but so are new buildings for Green and Rio Grande elementaries, as well as a major revovation of Washington Elementary. Those projects are now under way.

“We are extremely excited to get the public and the students in to see our new building,” Gallipolis City Superintendent Jack Payton said. “There’s a lot of last-minute details the contractors are attending to, but we’ll be as close to complete as we can be.”

After several unsuccessful attempts to pass bond issues for new high schools, Gallia County Local also saw passage of a 7.4-mill issue in November 2005, not only providing for new high schools, but renovations to its grade schools as a result of the “Quality Schools for Quality Kids” movement.

Most of the work on the elementaries was completed before action started in the past year on the new RVHS and SGHS. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new high schools were all held in 2006.

Gallia County Local Superintendent Dr. Charla Evans was not immediately available for comment.
