GALLIPOLIS — A police chase Thursday evening in Gallipolis ended in a head-on collision that left two women injured and resulted in the subsequent arrest of a burglary suspect.

According to Gallipolis Police Chief Clint Patterson, Nathan Halley, 24, Crown City, was wanted after being indicted on burglary charges by the Gallia County Grand Jury. Halley was first spotted at 7:35 p.m. Thursday in the vicinity of Smokin’ Rob’s on Eastern Ave., according to Gallia County 911 dispatchers.

Officers picked up Halley’s trail at the intersection of Second Ave. and Pine St. in Gallipolis and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but he fled toward the downtown area. The pursuit escalated as Halley tried to elude police by turning west onto Ohio 588/State St. He reportedly ran a red light at Fourth Ave. just seconds before he crossed the center line and crashed headlong into a vehicle headed east toward Gallipolis. The wreck occurred at the top of Skating Rink Hill on Ohio 588/State St. between the Outreach Center and Chillicothe Road.

Patterson said two women in the eastbound vehicle apparently suffered minor injuries and, as a precaution, were transported by Gallia County EMS to Holzer Medical Center. They were identified as Candice Montgomery, 31, Gallipolis, and Martha “Cassie” Walker, 26, Gallipolis. A small child riding with Montgomery and Walker apparently escaped with no injuries.

Halley, who was not injured in the wreck, attempted to escape following the collision, but was captured by police without further incident. Patterson said GPD will charge Halley with felony fleeing and eluding and failing to obey a traffic control device. The chief said the Ohio State Highway Patrol is also investigating the incident and may file additional charges once its probe is complete.

Another male in Halley’s vehicle was detained by police, but Patterson said no charges are expected to be filed against the second man.

The Gallipolis Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
