Point drops two at Family Healthcare Classic

NEW RICHMOND, W.Va. — It was a tough weekend for the Point Pleasant boys basketball team at the 2012 Family Healthcare Classic, as the Big Blacks suffered a 92-40 loss to Wyoming East on Thursday and a 67-61 setback to Westside on Friday in the 8th annual event held at Wyoming East High School.

The Big Blacks (1-6) — coming off a their first win, a 56-52 decision over Cabell Midland — were simply overwhelmed in the opening contest, as Wyoming East scored the first 11 points of the game en route to a 30-11 edge after eight minutes of play.

The Warriors never looked back, as the tournament hosts used a 28-13 run in the second canto to take comfortable 58-24 cushion into the intermission. WEHS went on a 21-7 run in the third for a 79-31 lead headed into the finale, then closed regulation on a 13-9 spurt to wrap up the 52-point outcome.

PPHS was outrebounded 37-17 and had 24 turnovers in the contest. Dillon McCarty led Point with 14 points, followed by Wade Martin with 12 points and Aden Yates with six markers. Garrett Norris had five points, while Marquez Griffin and Adam Slack respectively rounded out the scoring with two points and one marker.

Brett Bowling had a game-high 20 points for the Warriors, followed by Josh Tunstel with 13 markers.

The Big Blacks led most of the first half on Friday in the consolation contest, but Westlake used a pivotal 40-33 second half surge to ultimately secure a six-point triumph.

PPHS led 12-9 after eight minutes and took a 28-27 edge into halftime, but the Renegades countered with a 23-12 third quarter run to secure a 50-40 edge headed into the finale. Point Pleasant made a 21-17 run down the stretch and pulled to within a possession, but ultimately ran out of time in the rally attempt.

Dillon McCarty — who was a perfect 15-of-15 at the free throw line — led the Big Blacks with a game-high 24 points, followed by Aden Yates with 11 points and Andrew Williamson with seven markers.

Garrett Norris had six points in the losing effort, while Wade Martin contributed four points and Marquez Griffin had two markers. Adam Slack rounded out the scoring with one point.

Dylan Newsome paced Westside with 18 points and Levi Lambert added 12 markers. WHS was 22-of-27 at the free throw line for 81 percent.
