POMEROY — “Decades of Christmas with OAGC, 1930 to 2010” is the theme of the annual Christmas flower show to be staged next weekend in the Pomeroy Library social rooms by the Meigs County Garden Club Association.

The flower show, an annual kickoff to the holiday season, is open for viewing by the public on both Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21-22, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is no charge to view the show.

To show, to share, to grow, to know is an emphasis of the flower show. The “to show” category will feature nine classes in the artistic arrangement division include one for juniors, and another for community members who do not belong to a garden club.

The classes in the artistic design division are:

• “1930, Christmas Greetings with OAGC” — indoor or outdoor wreaths and hangings, open to club members and the community.

For garden club members only the classes are:

• “1940, In the Beginning OAGC’ — traditional design, a novice class for those who have never won a blue ribbon.

• “1950, Fun and Frolic, Rock ‘n Roll and Twist” — a design showing motion.

• “1960, Renewal and Prosperity” — A design featuring greens.

• “1970, Exploration and Adventure” —creative panel designs.

• “1980, Satellites Above” — an iluminary design.

• “1990, Dreams all Aglow” — design including candle/candles

• “2000 A Reawakening” — featuring Madonna with child.

• “2010 Christmas Wishes for the Future” — creative spatial thrust (class open to clubs and community)

In a “to share” section there will be a display of OAGC material, classes for gift wrap, for a child, for adults, table settings, informal functional luncheon type with one place setting.

In the “to grow” category which is open to everyone, there are classes for evergreens, berried branches, potted cacti or succulent, blooming house plants, foliage houseplants, and Christmas/Thanksgiving cacti for adults; an potted plants and cone critter crafts for junior.

In the “to know” category, there will be educational information on culinary herbs with handouts, a display of collections and crafts from club members and the community, and a selection of books from the Library.

The show rules require that arrangements be the work of the exhibitor and that there be only one entry per exhibitor in each artistic class. Baubles, glitter, snow, figurines, bases, backgrounds and other accessories are permitted in all classes provided they add distinction to the design.

Judging of show entries by an accredited judge of the OAGC will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday. At 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, the public is invited to listen to the commentary of the Master Gardeners on herbs and the story of their culinary and medicinal uses. There will also be a special display of books on herbs and gardening available at the Library.

Special awards to be presented at the flower show include best of show, reserve best of show, and creativity. Blue, red, yellow and white ribbons will be placed in each class.
