Gallipolis City Schools BOE addresses financial, personnel issues

GALLIPOLIS — A variety of financial and personnel issues dotted the agenda during the latest meeting of the Gallipolis City School District Board of Education.

The board approved all of the recommendations made by Superintendent Jack W. Payton, including a series of change orders regarding construction projects at the new Gallia Academy High School, the new Green Elementary School and the new Rio Grande Elementary School.

In other financial matters, the board approved amended appropriations in the amount of $47,005,544.03.

The board also approved Payton’s recommendation to utilize the following insurance carriers for the period from Dec. 1, 2009, through Nov. 30, 2011:

• Oasis/Core Source for dental coverage

• United Health Care for medical and drug and life/AD&D coverage

• VSP-Vision Care for vision coverage

The following people were employed for 2009-2010 academic year:

• Anthony Haner — bus driver at Step 0 of the Classified Salary Schedule, effective Dec. 7, 2009

• Lusher Mayo — 4-hour cook/custodian at Step 0 of the Classified Salary Schedule, effective Nov. 19, 2009

• Tom Hopkins — 7th grade head boys basketball coach

The board approved the following individuals to serve as volunteer athletic coaches for the 2009-2010 academic year:

• Scott Curfman — girls basketball

• Cheryl Greenlee — wrestling

• Scott Stanley — wrestling

The following people were approved as substitutes for the 2009-2010 academic year:

• Nick Craft — teacher

• Robert Rice — cook

• Andrea Voss — teacher

• Tom Walters — bus driver

The board approved the following physicians to conduct annual bus driver physicals according to regulations set forth by the Ohio Department of Education:

• John Ellison, DO

• Ashok Dayal, MD

• Annapurna Jagariamundi, MD

• Stephen Popper, DO

• Mark Walker, MD

The board also approved Payton’s proposal that the district appoint a representative to serve on the Gallia-Jackson-Vinton Joint Vocational School Board of Education for a two-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2010.

Donations were accepted from the following businesses and civic groups:

• Gallipolis Elks Lodge #107, $478.00 for library use

• Herr Foods, Inc., $100.00 for the Eastman Athletic Complex at the new GAHS

• Gallipolis Rotary Club, $1,443.33 for library use

• Supervalu, Inc., $100.00 for the Eastman Athletic Complex

The board also voted to renew the school district’s membership in the Gallia County Chamber of Commerce. The fee is $309.00.

Payton recommended that the board reject all bids for school buses and that was also approved.

The board will hold an organizational meeting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14, 2010. The regular January meeting will follow the organizational session.

The next board of education meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 16 at the GAHS library.
