GALLIPOLIS — With the closure of the 800 Block of First Avenue due to the slip in that area, the Gallipolis Police Department is reminding motorists that it is an offense to drive around “Road Closed” signs unless you are authorized to do so.
Section 331.26 (a) of the Gallipolis Ordinances states: “No person shall drive upon, along or across a street or highway, or any part of a street or highway that has been closed in the process of its construction, reconstruction or repair, and posted with appropriate signs by the authority having jurisdiction to close such street or highway.”
This section also makes the offense a minor misdemeanor which means a citation may be issued.
According to Gallipolis Police Chief Clinton Patterson, it is particularly important not to drive up to the slip in the 800 Block of First Avenue, as the area has not been repaired yet the ground in some areas may still not be stable.
Residents of this area are being allowed to access their homes by vehicle, but all other vehicles may be subject to citation if they are caught driving on the closed portion of the roadway.
“I understand that an occurrence of this type is rare and that people want to take a look, but sightseeing is not a valid reason to drive on a closed road,” Patterson said.
