GALLIPOLIS — It may be an off-year when it comes to elections, but there will be a number of local races to decide when voters go to the polls on Nov. 3.

Gallipolis City Commission, both local school boards, villages and townships will have candidates on the ballot, along with some tax issues.

The deadline to file for offices on this fall’s ballot with the Gallia County Board of Elections is Thursday, Aug. 20 at 4 p.m.

The candidate slate for the City Commission has already been set, as incumbents Jim Cozza, Dow Saunders and Caroll Snowden are seeking new four-year terms. Bob Marchi’s petition had been approved in February, but he was later appointed to the commission to fill the remainder of Sam Davis’ term, which expires in 2011, after Davis resigned.

Also in the running for the three commission seats are Jay Cremeens and William M. Johnson.

For the Gallipolis City Board of Education, seats now held by Lynn Angell and Dr. Timothy Kyger will be on the ballot, while three will be decided for the Gallia County Local Board of Education. Those seats are now held by Joyce Boothe, John Payne and Scott Williamson.

Voters will also decide seats on the village councils for Centerville, Cheshire, Crown City, Rio Grande and Vinton, while two trustees each will be chosen in all 15 townships.

Two issues are anticipated for the fall vote, a renewal of the sales tax addition that funds Gallia County 911, and a levy for the Gallia County Council on Aging to support the operations of the Senior Resource Center.

Fire protection levies are also expected from townships, elections officials said.

The number of petition signatures from qualified voters required for school board and trustees candidates is 25, and 10 for village council candidates. Officials advised those interested in running to be sure to sign their names as candidates, and ensure that those signing the petition are using their correct names and addresses.
