Countdown to Election Day 2009: Gallia Co. voters head to polls Nov. 3

GALLIPOLIS — This off-year election cycle is quickly coming to a conclusion. In addition to a pair of countywide issues and a handful of township fire protection levies, voters in Gallia County will also make decisions about leadership positions in the City of Gallipolis, villages of Centerville, Cheshire, Crown City, Rio Grande and Vinton, both school districts and all townships.

Gallipolis residents will choose from four candidates to fill three seats on the City Commission. Incumbents James A. Cozza and Carroll K. Snowden are facing challenges from Jay Cremeens and William Matt Johnson in next Tuesday’s election. Cozza is current president of the City Commission and Snowden is vice president.

The following is the breakdown of candidates for village council in Centerville, Cheshire, Crown City, Rio Grande and Vinton:

Centerville (four to be elected) — Virginia Daniels, Robert Terry, Brian Waugh and Ted Perroud.

Cheshire (four to be elected) — Glen Beebe, Leah C. Berger, Mark Coleman and John Westfall.

Crown City (four to be elected) — Kathy P. Johnson and James D. Lester.

Rio Grande (four to be elected) — Robert W. Allen, Cory E. Camden, David J. Brodeur, Timothy Kyle Divens, Mark E. Neal II and Patty Weatherholt.

Vinton (four to be elected) — Lance Brown, Brenda Burris, Charles R. Easter, Richard Edward Eblin, Mary McCarley, Brandi Whealdon and Joshua Whealdon.

Incumbents Lynn Angell and Timothy V. Kyger are running unopposed in the race for the two seats on the Gallipolis City Schools Board of Education.

Meanwhile, six candidates are vying for three seats on the Gallia County Local Schools Board of Education. That group includes Amy Beth Barber, Mel Carter, Brenda J. Mershon, Billy E. Swain, Brandon Twyman and Scott Williamson. Williamson is the lone incumbent on the county schools ballot.

The following is a rundown of the township trustee elections around the county:

Addison (two to be elected) — Fred F. Burnett, J.P. Roberts, Jr., and Robert G. Rothgeb.

Cheshire (two to be elected) — Michael R. Conkle, J.D. Taylor and Joe Dean Roush.

Clay (two to be elected) — Bobby A. Franklin, Dale R. Fife and Ray Slone.

Gallipolis (two to be elected) — Richard M. Bane, Harry Dean Brownell and C. Ronnie Carmichael.

Green (two to be elected) — William L. Baker, Jamie Graham, J. Garry Lewis, Seth Montgomery, Jerry L. Pinkerman and Tom Woodward.

Greenfield (two to be elected) — Henry M. Bartels, Hayden L. Hammond, Roy McCarty and Eric S. Shriver.

Guyan (two to be elected) — Ronald Bias, Roy L. Jones, Nickie S. Swain and Roger A. Watson.

Harrison (two to be elected) — Margaret Adkins, Thomas Mark Cummons, Dale E. Taylor and Donald E. Woodie.

Huntington (two to be elected) — Rodney W. Alderman, Robert L. McClaskey and Roger Shadwick.

Morgan (two to be elected) — Clarence R. Hash, Samuel O. Kemper, John R. Manley and Charles K. Smith.

Ohio (two to be elected) — James D. Green and James E. Waugh.

Perry (two to be elected) — Larry A. Fallon and Jeffrey A. Pope.

Raccoon (two to be elected) — Dwight Rees and Chuck W. Williams, Jr.

Springfield (two to be elected) — Jeannie F. Hampton, Scott L. Howell, Jack L. Riley and Vaughan E. Taylor.

Walnut (two to be elected) — Wanda Hively and Richard L. Ingles.

Gallia County residents will also vote on three members of the Gallia-Vinton Educational Service Center Governing Board next Tuesday. Carol A. Porter of McArthur is running in #2 Sub-District. Douglas W. Pugh of Crown City is on the ballot in #4 Sub-District. Stephen D. Saunders of Bidwell is running in #6 Sub-District.

Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
