GALLIPOLIS — Of the 16 projects submitted to Gallia County for 2007 Community Development Block Grant monies, county commissioners must choose no more than six, unless they receive a waiver from the state.

A total of $367,461 has been requested from county entities for various projects, including paving, equipment purchases and repair projects.

Only $153,000 is available for 2007 and commissioners have already committed to two projects, the storm drainage study in Vinton at $5,460 and the Ohio 325 sidewalk project in Rio Grande, costing $20,000, to allow both villages to apply for outside funding.

The other CDBG requests are:

  • Addison Township — Nibert Road resurfacing project, $9,106.

  • County Engineer — Hannan Trace Road paving project (Ohio Township), $49,527.25.

  • City of Gallipolis — Repair and painting of city park bandstand, $20,000.

  • Gallipolis Township — Valley Drive slip repair project, $19,773.50.

  • Greenfield Township Volunteer Fire Department — Upgrade communications apparatus and portable radio/pager for each project, $34,762.50.

  • Harrison Volunteer Fire Department — Firefighter equipment project, $19,304.

  • Huntington Township — Keaton Road paving project, $36,592.

  • Morgan Township — Chamberlain Road paving project, $35,218.50.

  • Ohio Township — Horse Creek Road paving project, $28,792.

  • Outreach Center — Administration assistance for outreach shelter, $10,000.

  • Village of Rio Grande — Planning grant for sewer system infiltration testing, $4,500.

  • Rio Grande Volunteer Fire Department — Thermal imaging camera, defibrillator and training, $15,645.

  • Springfield Township — Rodney Village II street paving project, $55,835.25.

  • Vinton Village — Community center security system, $2,945.

The commissioners will award projects at a public hearing scheduled for Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m. in the courthouse.

While commissioners review 2007 project, County Administrator Karen Sprague is busy getting projects awarded in 2006 ready, most of which will be bid out after environmental studies are completed.

Projects awarded in 2006 and waiting for the completion of environmental studies are:

  • Village of Vinton — flood and drainage facilities.

  • Ohio Township — Peters Branch Road improvement project.

  • Addison Township — Oil Hollow Road improvement project.

  • Guyan Township — Mercerville streets improvement project.

  • City of Gallipolis — Parks and recreation facilities project.

The commissioners also awarded $5,000 to the Outreach Center in 2006 and have bid out and are now awaiting permits for the Village of Cheshire public rehabilitation project.
