PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Two for the price of one.
It was a doubly good afternoon for the Logan golf program Friday as the Chieftains came away with both a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League victory and the Portsmouth Invitational team championship during an 18-hole affair at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club in Scioto County.
The Chieftains came away with the 2014 Portsmouth Invitational crown after blasting the 14-team field by a dozen shots, as LHS posted a winning four-man score of 304 over 18 holes of play. Piketon was the overall runner-up with a tally of 316, while Gallia Academy (321), Warren (335) and Logan Elm (344) rounded out the top five efforts.
Chesapeake (345), Portsmouth (348), West Union (354), Jackson (355) and Portsmouth Clay (358) respectively landed in the six through 10 spots, while Chillicothe (380), Waverly (381), River Valley (408) and Wheelersburg (415) rounded out the final four team scores.
Mitchell McFarland of Wheelersburg and Logan Sheets of River Valley each posted the low score of the day after firing matching 1-under par rounds of 71. McFarland defeated Sheets in a one-hole playoff to earn medalist honors at the event.
Taae Hamid led GAHS with an overall effort of 74 on the day, followed by Dares Hamid with a 78 and Marcus Moore with an 81. Zach Graham rounded out the 18-hole team tally with an 82, while Bruce Moreaux also carded an 87.
Sheets paced RVHS with a 71, followed by Evan Justus and Cliff Chapman with respective rounds of 110 and 111. Grant Gilmore rounded out the team tally with a 116.
The front-9 also served as the second match between SEOAL schools Friday, which Logan ultimately claimed by a single shot. The Chieftains posted a winning SEOAL score of 154, followed by runner-up Gallia Academy with a 155. Warren (167), Portsmouth (171) and Jackson (178) rounded out the remaining SEOAL scores.
Jake Barstow of LHS won league medalist honors with a 35, edging out the Blue Devils’ Zach Graham (36) by one shot.
Logan is still unbeaten in SEOAL play after two rounds of play.
