Point Pleasant charges past Scarlet Knights

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — The streak continues.
The Point Pleasant boys basketball team earned its fifth consecutive victory Monday night with a 72-68 triumph over visiting Cabell Midland.
The Big Blacks (10-6) edged the Scarlet Knights (3-13) 20-to-19 in the opening canto but Cabell Midland outscored PPHS 16-to-13 in the second quarter to take the two-point edge into the half.
Point Pleasant answered back in the second half outscoing the guests 20-to-17 in the third period, led by Wade Martin with 10 points. PPHS was 10-of-13 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the 72-68 win over CMHS.
Wade Martin led the charge for Point Pleasant with 25 points, 18 of which came in the second half. Nick Templeton marked 11 points in the win, followed by Alex Somerville, Brian Gibbs and Aden Yates with 10 points apiece. Evan Potter with four points and Garrett Norris with two rounded out the Big Blacks’ scoring output.
PPHS was 17-of-25 (68 percent) from the free throw line and connected on five three-pointers.
The Scarlet Knights were led by Coy Pettit with 13 points, followed by Mark Wilcox and Cole Tilley with 11 apiece. Keegan Adkins had 10 points, Sawyer Beckett marked nine, Jacob Morgan added eight, Andrew Fraley marked six and Collin Belmont rounded out the CMHS scoring with two points.
Cabell Midland shot 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line and made seven trifectas in the setback.
The Big Blacks have now scored over 70 points in four straight contests, while Cabell Midland hasn’t scored 70 in its last five outings. The Scarlet Knights have now lost six games in a row and 10 of their last 11.
