SOUTH POINT, Ohio — The River Valley boys basketball team dropped its sixth straight decision Friday night following a 68-32 setback to host South Point in an Ohio Valley Conference contest in Lawrence County.
The visiting Raiders (3-10, 1-3 OVC) never led in the contest, as the Pointers stormed out to a 20-7 lead after eight minutes and never looked back. SPHS (5-4, 3-1) followed with a 14-8 second quarter run to secure a comfortable 34-15 cushion at the intermission.
South Point showed no signs of a letdown in the second half, as the hosts went on a 16-12 run to extend their lead out to 50-27 through three periods of play. The Pointers closed regulation with a 14-5 spurt to wrap up the 36-point triumph.
Dayton Hardway led the Raiders with nine points, followed by John Qualls with eight points and Tyler Twyman with four markers. Austin Neekamp also chipped in three points in the setback.
Cody Lee, Justin Rusk, Bailey Rhodes and Andrew Moffett rounded out the RVHS scoring with two points apiece. The Raiders were 7-of-14 at the free throw line for 50 percent.
Brandon Barnes paced South Point with a game-high 22 points, half of which came in the opening quarter of play. Marquis Foley was next with 17 points, while Brady Rickard had 10 markers for the hosts — who were 10-of-17 at the charity stripe for 59 percent.
