POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Fan Appreciation Night goes best when spectators have something to cheer about.
The Point Pleasant wrestling team provided plenty of reason for the home fans to waive their free towels around Thursday night after the Big Blacks claimed a 49-21 victory over visiting Athens in a non-conference dual match in Mason County.
The Big Blacks passed out free white towels with the school’s logo on it to the first 200 fans in attendance at Thursday night’s dual match, and the hosts followed by going 9-5 overall in head-to-head competition against the Bulldogs.
Out of the nine individual victories, PPHS earned six pinfall wins and also won a decision, a forfeit and a majority decision. AHS, conversely, had only two pinfall wins and three decision victories.
The event started at the 106-pound division and worked down, and Athens held a brief 3-0 lead in the team standings after the first of 14 matches. Point won the next three matches for a 16-3 edge, but the Bulldogs countered with 12 straight points for a small 16-15 deficit.
The guests were never closer, although the dual was tied at four wins apiece through eight matches. Point Pleasant owned a 22-18 lead at that point, then won five of the final six matches to wrap up the 28-point triumph.
Scotty Wilcox (113), Guy Fisher (126), Hunter White (145), Josh Hudson (160), Tannor Hill (195) and Alec Stanley (285) all recorded pinfall victories for the Big Blacks.
Zach Stewart claimed a 15-4 majority decision over Brian Alfman in the 120-pound weight class, while Grant Safford earned a 5-1 decision over Austin Roseman in the 170 division. Jacob Duncan also won by forfeit in the 220 weight class.
Paul Pook (132) and Emmett Covington (138) had pinfall victories for Athens, while Skyler St. Peter (106), Hunter St. Peter (152) and Dallas Lazear (182) came away with decision wins in their respective matches.
