MARION, Indiana — William Paulino’s first goal as a member of the University of Rio Grande men’s soccer team turned out to be a big one.
The freshman forward from Sao Paulo, Brazil found the net with 7:56 remaining in the second overtime to give the ninth-ranked RedStorm to a 2-1 win over Davenport (Mich.) University, Friday afternoon, in the first round of the Indiana Wesleyan University Classic at Wildcat Field.
Rio Grande improved to 3-0 with the win, extending its regular season unbeaten streak to 17 straight outings.
Davenport suffered its first loss in four outings this season.
Paulino’s game-winner came off an assist from senior defender Craig Davies (Wolverhampton, England) following a corner kick by senior midfielder Maxi Viera (Montevideo, Uruguay).
Davenport took a 1-0 lead just 16:23 into the contest when Dzenan Catic pushed a shot by Rio Grande junior goal keeper Jon Dodson (Tiffin, OH), with Omar Mansah being credited with an assist.
That’s how things stayed until freshman defender Patricio Arce (Santiago, Chile) knotted the score at 1-1 when he found the net off an assist from freshman midfielder Callum Cobb (Aldershot, England) with 19:43 left in regulation.
Both teams finished with 10 shots, although the RedStorm held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
Dodson finished with one save in the winning effort for Rio Grande, while Mirza Harambasic stopped three shots in a losing cause for the Panthers.
