City to start paving projects

Beginning Monday motorists in the city of Portsmouth will need to be aware of the paving work being done on several streets.
“The streets we’re going to do are going to be reduced to one lane,” Crystal Weghorst of the city Engineering Department said. “However, there had to be an exception with Front Street here by the murals, and up to the break in pavement underneath the new bridge. They’re going to actually close that road completely the (Oct.) 7 through the (Oct.) 9.”
Weghorst said paving will take place on Front Street from the west opening of the floodwall to the Grand Bridge.
“I am asking all Shawnee State University traffic to use the east entrance to the campus for those three days because they’re going to mill and pave Front Street here,” Weghorst said. “The rest of the roads that we have chosen to do this year should have flaggers on site, and it should just be kind of a delay instead of an actual road closing. So there will be no real detours.”
Weghorst said, weather permitting, each road should take at least a day to pave.
“We’re also doing a couple of big stretches this year - we’re doing Front Street, of course, and then we’re doing Scherer’s Hollow,” Weghorst said. “Scherer’s Hollow is terrible, so it’s going to be a lot better. We’re also doing Gallia Street in Sciotoville from the four-way stop to the bridge in front of the (Wolfe-Nelson) funeral home. It’s pretty bad. And then we’re doing from Ninth Street on Offnere all the way to Front Street. So Offnere Street will be done all the way. We’ve done it from Oberling’s (12th Street) to Ninth last year, and we’re just building on that again this year, so that Offnere Street will be completely finished.”
Weghorst said she is hopeful that the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will pave U.S. 52 east and west next year, with the city being responsible for only the matching funds instead of the full cost of the project.
Streets to be paved by the city beginning Monday:
Front Street - from the west opening in the floodwall to the Grant Bridge
Offnere Street - from Ninth to Front Street
Noel Drive - from 29th Street to Kenroe Avenue
29th Street - from Scioto Trail to Kenroe Avenue at Coles Boulevard
Shawnee Road - from Coles Boulevard to Hill View Court
Scherers Holl0w - from Dorman Drive to Pleasant Avenue
Gay Street - Arby’s patch
Bonser Run - multiple patches
