GALLIPOLIS — In the year since her disappearance, investigators are still seeking information as to the whereabouts of Sharon Yoczik.
Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning said Tuesday that, despite continued efforts, his office has not uncovered any new evidence. Yoczik, who was 68 at the time of her disappearance, has not been seen since March 22, 2013.
Yoczik was initially reported missing by her husband, who returned home to find her gone from their residence on Neighborhood Road. Investigators later received information that the missing woman had been spotted walking along Ohio 7 near the intersection of Ohio 218 the evening before her reported disappearance.
A search with canine assistance along a portion of the Ohio River near the intersection where she was last seen yielded a pair of eyeglasses on the riverbank. The eyeglasses are believed to belong to Yoczik as the eyeglass prescription, as well as the type of eyeglasses, were later matched by a local optometrist to those worn by Yoczik.
The eyeglass have remained the only reported trace of Yoczik uncovered by investigators since her disappearance last March, despite extensive searching by multiple agencies by ground and on water with the assistance from countless volunteers and the National Underwater Rescue and Recovery Institution.
Browning said that, with the assistance of the agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and several out-of-state agencies, his office has continued to check out all leads they receive. They have also continued to routinely check the river area along where Yoczik lived.
“We would like to remind the public that Sharon is still missing and that her family needs to know what has happened to her,” Browning said.
Browning also said he encourages people to come forward with any new information. Tips can be left anonymously for investigators at the sheriff’s office by calling (740) 446-6555.
“We have a lot of resources we can bring to the investigation between law enforcement and BCI,” he said. “If anyone can provide information, please contact us. Sharon’s family deserves to know what happened.”
Yoczik has been described by investigators as a white female standing five-feet, two-inches tall and weighing approximately 120 pounds. She has blue eyes and grey hair.
