RIO GRANDE, Ohio — America’s Wounded Warriors are being honored today at a special pageant organized by a Mason County woman.

Amanda Baker, a 2011 Point Pleasant High School graduate and student at the University of Rio Grande, is directing the pageant that beings at 3 p.m. at the Berry Fine and Performing Arts Center. Admission is $2 for adults; children under 3 get in free, as do title holders. All proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Wounded Warrior Project is a national organization that raises awareness and enlists the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; it helps injured service members aid and assist each other; it provides unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.

Baker became inspired by the Wounded Warrior Project when her sister’s boyfriend, a Marine, was wounded in action serving in Afghanistan. Baker said she got to see first-hand the way the organization helped “wounded warriors” come home to resources and in a way that rebuilt their self confidence and gave them tools to get back into the world.

“It’s a wonderful organization,” Baker said.

Baker, who also currently holds the title of Pure American National Sweetheart, has been in the pageant world for a while, but this is her first time as a director. She’s being assisted by Delyssa Edmonds and Baker’s mother Tammy Baker. She hopes to continue this pageant next year and make it a tradition.

The pageant will consist of different categories for girls ages 9 to late 20s. Helping support the pageant is the American Legion Post 23 of Point Pleasant, which sponsored the crowns. In addition, Siders Jewelry and Edmonds sponsored the sashes, while Trophy King and Buckeye Signs provided trophies and T-shirts, respectively.

In addition, canned food is being collected at the pageant to benefit clients of Crosslight of Hope in Southern Mason County.

Baker is the daughter of John and Tammy Baker of Point Pleasant.
