GALLIPOLIS — Saturday’s concert at the Ariel-Ann Carson Dater Performing Arts Centre is a celebration of Black History Month and a benefit for the Bill and LaTanya Smith Family.

The concert is free though donations will be accepted for the family who lost their home and two children, Braxton Smith and Tiffany Grant, due to a house fire in January in Point Pleasant. A third child, Tré Smith, is undergoing intensive treatment at Shriners Hospital for Children in Cincinnati for burns he received in the fire.

Bill Smith, spoke to the Point Pleasant Register this week and reported 14-year old Tré is scheduled for more surgeries next week and that his face, hands and arms are now covered in his own skin after grafting procedures.

Bill also said members of the the Smith family will be present for this Saturday’s concert which is at 7 p.m.. The concert is being called, “A Stony Road” and will be led by Christian Scott featuring the choirs of Ordinary People, Providence Mass and Unity in the Community. In all, a combined choir of 70-plus voices will be featured.

“A Stony Road” concert will share music with the audience through old spirituals such as “Done Made My Vow to the Lord” and “I Don’t Feel No Ways Tired,” and through selections that reflect the contemporary black gospel music such as “High and Lifted Up” and “Our God is an Awesome God.” Historical commentary will be offered by Elaine Armstrong.

Admission to “A Stony Road” is sponsored by the Annual Emancipation Celebration Day Inc. and the John Gee Black Historical Center and is free. Again, an offering will be taken for the benefit of the Bill and LaTanya Smith family.

Bill thanked those who plan to attend the concert and added: “Thanks to all who are praying for Tré and our family. God bless our community.”
