Remembering Pearl Harbor
MIDDLEPORT — “Yesterday, December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.”
The words spoke by President Franklin D. Roosevelt 72 years ago to members of Congress summarized the attack by the Japanesse on Pearl Harbor.
The attack, which killed 2,000 Americans and wounded another 1,000, lead the United States into World War II.
On Saturday, 72 years after the attack, members of American Legion Post 128, Post 39 and Post 602, along with VFW members paid tribute to the anniversary of the attacks with a ceremony at the Middleport Levy.
A wreath was placed in the river and the Legion Honor Guard offered a gun salute followed by the playing of taps.
