RIO GRANDE — The beloved music of The Beatles will grace the Berry Fine & Performing Arts Center on Dec. 6 as the Grande Chorale delivers Let It Be: A Tribute to the Beatles.

The Grande Chorale is the premiere musical chorus for the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College. The fall concert, free and open to the public, is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The Beatles are widely regarded as one of history’s most influential bands. Their music spanned numerous genres while incorporating classical elements in innovative ways. Much of The Beatles’ work remains as popular today as when Beatlemania exploded in the 1960s.

“They wrote music just for the fun of writing music … for the sole purpose of entertaining people,” said Aryn Gritter, a third-year Grande Chorale member and Music Comprehensive student at Rio Grande.

“The one thing that a lot of us have in common is that we all love The Beatles,” Gritter continued. “So when (Grande Chorale Director Dr. Sarin Williams) proposed this fall that we do The Beatles, we all got pretty excited.”

The Grande Chorale consists of seven student vocalists – Cody Allen (tenor), Stephanie Cartmell (alto), Andy Knipp (tenor), Jordan Lombardo (bass), Chloe Nared (alto), Ally Waddell (soprano) and Gritter (soprano) – and the combo of Skyler Thompson (drums) and Sunny Sundquist (piano). John Polcyn serves as sound technician.

The concert will include popular Beatles’ songs such as “Let It Be,” “Yesterday,” “When I’m 64,” “All You Need Is Love” and “Blackbird.”

However, audience members can expect the chorale to lend its own signature touch to each piece. Gritter praised Dr. Williams’ ability to utilize different arrangements within existing popular works to create a unique listening experience.

“There is some Beatles music that we’re artistically doing differently,” Gritter said. “‘Let It Be,’ in particular, sounds more like a gospel choir piece, and it sounds really cool.”

The Grande Chorale is one of the more active organizations at Rio Grande. The group performs throughout the year on campus, in the community and throughout the region.

“The Grande Chorale is one of the university’s flagship musical ensembles, and they just get better every semester,” Dr. Williams said. “These students have worked very hard during the semester, and that work will be evident to all. This is an extremely entertaining concert. I guarantee you will leave humming at least one of the tunes.”
