GALLIPOLIS — Every Friday afternoon during her enrichment class, Haylee Polinsky, a seventh grade student at Gallia Academy Middle School, heads to Mr. Bob Hudak’s office to report for work. Yes, for work, because in addition to being a full-time student, Polinsky is also the school psychologist’s assistant.
Polinsky came to the attention of Hudak two years ago while she was a student at Washington Elementary.
“Haylee is an intelligent, conscientious and hard-working girl, so when she showed an interest in becoming a psychologist, I thought, ‘what better way to learn about the profession than to have her shadow me’,” said Hudak.
Now in seventh grade, Polinsky is exploring career interest in becoming either a psychologist or a neurologist. As a school psychologist assistant, Polinsky assists Hudak in the intervention classroom, runs errands and helps plan activities.
“In addition, this year Haylee and I will be studying Dr. Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences using the book ‘You are Smarter than You Think: A Kids Guide to Multiple Intelligences’,” said Hudak. “This book helps the reader to understand the various intelligences, as well as how we can build upon our ‘smarts’ and strengthen those areas that we may struggle with.
“Haylee has a natural ability to relate to children, and I think she would be an excellent psychologist,” added Hudak. “Not only is she the youngest school psychologist’s assistant in America she’s also the greatest!”
