GALLIPOLIS — Bossard Memorial Library in Gallipolis was filled to capacity Saturday afternoon by a group of young men who represented their school well and made a positive impact on the numerous children in attendance for a special story time program, according to Youth Services Coordinator Rachael Barker.
On Monday, Barker reported that Saturday’s “Swing into Reading” special program has been her favorite so far that she has organized in her tenure at Bossard Library, a program that was made special by the University of Rio Grande RedStorm baseball team.
Over 30 players and their coaches crowded into the library on Saturday to answer questions, play catch and even read to the children in attendance. The team also lead a rousing rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
“I felt honored to be around such a great group of young men. They really went above and beyond helping with the baseball program,” Barker said. “I was very impressed by how the baseball players interacted with the kids. They were such a positive reflection of the University of Rio Grande.
“Respectful, professional, and a whole lot of fun would be how I would describe the Rio Grande RedStorm baseball team,” she added.
In addition to several games, trivia, crafts, free snacks and hotdogs, Barker also prepared specially-made baseball cards for those children in attendance. She further cited the library staff for their hard work in organizing and preparing for Saturday’s program.
“Many hours went into planning this program. I couldn’t have done it without the help from our wonderful library staff, and the Friends of the Library,” she said.
Barker further commented that, with the permission of the baseball coaches and team, she would be more than happy to organize another program in the future with the RedStorm to help make a positive impact on the children in the community to not only entice a love of baseball, but also a love of reading.
“I would love to do another program in the future with the Rio Grande University Red Storm baseball team,” she said.
