GALLIPOLIS — For the seventh year, those visiting the Gallipolis City Park this Labor Day weekend were able to take in Native American cultural heritage and history during the Seventh Annual Harvest Moon Pow Wow.

The event, sponsored by the Native American Education Association, Inc., is a way for Native Americans to come together and express their culture through dance and music, and is also a chance for non-native visitors to learn and honor the history of the indigenous people of the United States.

Event coordinator Rona Roach said that the Harvest Moon Pow Wow, held annually in the city park, allows Native Americans to not only share their native culture with the community, but also to showcase their culture in a positive light.

“Hollywood [doesn’t] portray Native Americans in that great of a light,” Roach said. “For us to go and show our heritage means a lot to us.”

The event also gives Native Americans a chance to share experiences, discuss current issues and to demonstrate, sell and exhibit their work.

Roach further stated that the pow wow is an event for everyone, not just those with Native American background, and she encourages the entire community to take part in the event each year.

“We include everybody,” Roach said. “The Pow Wow is basically Native Americans gathering to show our heritage and spirituality.”
