Imagine the surprise of maintenance workers at Greenfield’s Mitchell Park when they discovered a partially submerged vehicle in the park’s pond as they mowed the grounds Tuesday afternoon.

But that’s what happened, according to Greenfield Police Chief Tim Hester, who said the department received the call about the white Jeep SUV in the pond shortly after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

GPD officers responded to the scene, as well as emergency personnel with the Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District.

The SUV, Hester said, was found to have been reported stolen out of Fayette County.

The vehicle was unoccupied, Hester said, and was pulled from the pond with a wrecker.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the discovery and is handling the theft investigation, Hester said.
