A Highland County man is facing sex charges involving a minor after law enforcement officials received a complaint of a small child being sexually abused.
Highland County Sheriff Richard Warner said deputies and a detective with Highland County Children Services responded Sunday to a residence on Shaw Baker Road in southern Highland County to investigate the complaint. Upon arrival, they found drugs and drug paraphernalia in plain view and a large amount of loaded firearms and ammunition.
During a check on the firearms, Warner said one of them was found to be reported as stolen out of Indiana in 1998.
Taken into custody was Wayne P. Davis, 56, who has a Winchester address but lives in Highland County’s Concord Township. He was charged with gross sexual imposition involving a minor, receiving stolen property, having weapons while under disability, drug possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Warner said the suspected drug was marijuana and that the paraphernalia was also marijuana related.
The alleged victim is a 5-year-old female, according to the sheriff.
Davis was arraigned Monday in Hillsboro Municipal Court where a preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 6. As of Tuesday evening, Davis was still incarcerated at the Highland County Justice Center on a $15,000 bond.
“We take crimes against children very serious. I applaud my officers and Highland County Children Services for their quick response to the complaint,” Warner said. “The presence of loaded firearms, drugs and pornographic material throughout this residence is of great concern. Small children should not be subjected to this type of living environment.
“My office, as well as Highland County Children Services, will be completing their investigations together and will be forwarding this case to Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins for her review for presentation to a Highland County grand jury.”
