Sandy Borden is one of those people who believes if you live in a community, you should jump into the activities of that community with both feet. Borden, a Scioto County native and Notre Dame High School graduate, will receive the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce’s Meritorious Service Award at the chamber’s Annual Appreciation Banquet on Nov. 7 in the Family Life Center of the Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson.
Borden, whose background is in health and wellness education, worked at the Portsmouth YMCA where she was physical fitness director. She was in on the ground floor of the SOMC Life Center. She was sent to Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas, to start physical education classes. She taught aerobics, and at Shawnee State University, she taught hyper-physical education classes.
Her next move was to the world’s largest YMCA in Lebanon, Ohio in 1996. Instead of just teaching classes, she became their financial aid coordinator.
“I got to give away scholarships for people who could not afford memberships,” Borden said.
In Jackson, where her husband, Scott, had been promoted to a Staff Lieutenant in the Ohio State Highway Patrol, before retirement, Borden’s official professional title is Community Outreach Coordinator for the Four Winds Community Nursing Facility. But her involvement goes far beyond her job.
“The Meritorious Service Award is something we don’t even give every year,” Jackson Mayor Randy Heath, said. “But if we feel there is someone who has just been outstanding in the community, and has just been really tireless in helping others, then we can bestow this honor. I know my Chamber of Commerce Board felt unanimously that Sandy was most deserving of this honor. She has really put her heart and soul into the community - both, through her job and in her personal life.”
Borden was thrilled.
“I am very honored and humbled,” Borden said.
Borden serves as the president of the Jackson County United Fund, which last year raised nearly $175,000 to assist at least 22 different community agencies, is active in the Jackson Rotary Club, and is a member of the Jackson Area YMCA board as well as many other organizations.
