GALLIPOLIS — A semi tractor-trailer accident on U.S. 35 a few miles east of Rio Grande on Monday resulted in the death of the driver, who was a Dayton man.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred around 6:03 p.m. and occurred near mile post 8 on U.S. 35. The roadway closed to one lane of traffic as a result of the crash. The lane remained close for roughly six hours. The crash is currently still under investigation.
The sole victim of the crash has been identified as David C. Wise, 66, of Dayton. He was driving a 2011 Mack semi truck, according to reports, and taken by McCoy Moore Funeral home after first responders removed him from the inside of the truck cab.
Reports state that Wise was traveling eastbound on U.S. 35 before driving off the left side of the road and through the median. He crossed the westbound lanes and eventually struck an embankment and a ditch before overturning. Wise was reported to have been wearing his seat belt.
This is the second major trucking fatality of the year in Gallia County. Another fatality occurred on State Route 160 in mid-June that involved the overturning of a dump truck carrying asphalt.
