GALLIPOLIS — Abby VanSickle, a sophomore at Gallia Academy High School, was named this season’s Gallipolis River Recreation Queen Sunday evening.

“I’m just so excited to represent River Rec Festival as our queen,” said VanSickle. “I’m not sure where I’ll be attending (college) but I know that I would like to do marine biology. I’m hoping I’ll be able to start out at (the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College) and get my generals but I would like to live on the coast somewhere. A lot of people don’t have the opportunity to live along a beautiful river and it’s just a great opportunity to have an amazing festival and (show it off).”

The festival queen is typically granted a scholarship along with her reign.

VanSickle is the daughter of Dale and Danella Newberry of Gallipolis. Abby attends Gallia Academy High School where she is a Varsity Cheerleader, a member of Key Club, the track team, Madrigals and symphonic choir; She participated in Solo and Ensemble Contest receiving a superior rating. She enjoys being in the musical cast and the Madrigal variety show.
