GALLIPOLIS — Gallipolis in Lights has finally blazed forth in Gallipolis City Park and welcomes all who would walk within its glow.

According to onlyinyourstate.com, the display ranks 14th in Ohio Christmas lights displays for 2016 and fourth on its listing for “most enchanting, magical Christmas towns.”

Shari Rocchi, GIL Committee Chairperson, touted the rankings at the evening lighting ceremony last week. State Representative Ryan Smith (R-Bidwell) was present to share his love of the lighting display and winner of the Miss Gallipolis in Lights Pageant, Ryelee Sipple, Candice McNeal and Andrea Thomas, threw the switch.

New additions to the light displays this year include a Santa Claus figure which will be housed in the bandstand of Gallipolis City Park, a lighting display resting in the Kerr Memorial Fountain as well as a collection of “light trees” on the east side of the park which flicker in time to music played on 98.1 FM. An additional 300 light balls were added to this year’s trees to mark a total of 1,300. Roughly 115 Christmas trees have also been erected along the walking paths of the park, each decorated around an organization’s theme or in memory of a loved one.

A new addition to the lighting display will include a live nativity scene. According to volunteer Angie Rocchi, churches from across the region have been invited to schedule appearances and times to take part in the exhibit.

Gallipolis in Lights will be holding its 2016 gala at the Elks Lodge Dec. 1. The event will start a 6 p.m. with a social hour, dinner will begin at 7 p.m. Comers can expect an evening filled with fine dining, spirits and Christmas favorites performed by John Eric Booth.
