OHIO VALLEY — Reuse Industries is pleased to announce the third annual Appalachian Ohio ReUse Competition. Open to youth and adult residents of Appalachian Ohio, the competition offers a showcase and over $3,000 in cash prizes for artistic and functional products made from re-used materials.
“We saw close to 200 amazing entries in our first two competitions, shining a light on the ingenuity, innovation and resourcefulness at the heart of our region’s culture and economy,” said Zachary Holl, ReUse executive director.
“Beyond celebrating creativity, we aim to promote and grow an upcycled product economy in our region,” said Holl. “Many people don’t recognize the real economic opportunities being lost when we throw away materials that have value as feedstock for new products. The number of products tagged as upcycled on www.etsy.com, for example, grew by over 3,900 percent since 2009 – from 7,900 to over 316,000.”
The ReUse Competition is among several “making and fixing” initiatives launched by ReUse in recent years, laying the foundation for Athens MakerSpace, which ReUse will establish in upcoming months in Athens following facility renovations. The makerspace will prove tools, workspace, materials, instruction and entrepreneurial support to help people make products including upcycled products.
“Our makerspace will include some retail space to sell locally-made upcycled products,” said Holl. “We see the ReUse Competition exhibition on November 12 as a great opportunity for local upcyclers to show off their products.”
The 2016 competition has five categories — artistic, clothing/fashion/jewelry, home and garden, furniture and technology — in three age groups: youth (age 12 and under), young adult (age 13-17) and adult (age 18+).
Competition partners and supporters include Rural Action, Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery, the Sugar Bush Foundation, the Athens Foundation and the Appalachian Ohio Zero Waste Initiative.
The deadline to register for the competition is Nov. 1. The exhibition and awards event is Saturday, November 12 at the Hocking College gymnasium, followed by Rural Action’s annual Zero Waste Celebration. The registration form and competition details can be found at www.reuseindustries.org.
